Should You Try to Work While Applying for SSD Benefits?

Many people who apply for disability benefits want to know whether they should attempt to continue working or start working again while their cases are pending. This is an issue that must be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, taking into account your specific medical condition.

I am Don Anderson, a Clearwater Social Security disability attorney with more than 35 years of legal experience. As a local attorney providing personal attention to each case, I can advise you on your work options. Contact my office today to schedule a free consultation.

Understanding the Impact of Work and Income on Your Benefits

Depending on the facts of your case, if you are able to hold down a part-time job or some other type of work, this may demonstrate to the Social Security Administration (SSA) that you are making an effort, which could cause them to look more favorably on your claim.

However, working while you have a disability can also reduce the benefits you receive and may even cut off your eligibility so that you will need to reapply in the future.

If you are approved for SSD benefits, you will receive a past-due payment for all the months beginning five months after you became disabled. However, if you worked during those months, your payment will be reduced and may even be cut down to zero.

If you earn enough money for long enough for work, you may lose your eligibility for benefits entirely. That does not mean you cannot qualify in the future, but you will need to apply again.

The Bottom Line: Every Case Is Unique

Whether you should try to work depends on how severe your medical condition is, how badly you need income now in order to meet your basic obligations, and the long-term impact of your work on your benefits. To discuss your specific circumstances, contact me today.
