Understanding the SSA Listings of Impairments

If you are planning to apply or have already applied for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits, you may have heard of the Social Security Administration (SSA) listings of impairments, and you may be wondering whether your medical condition fits into any of those listings.

I am Don Anderson, a Clearwater SSD impairments attorney with more than 35 years of legal experience. I have an in-depth understanding of the Social Security process and can explain what criteria you need to meet to qualify. For a free consultation, contact my office today.

Do You Have a Severe Enough Condition to Qualify Under the Listings?

The following are the major categories used by the SSA in its adult listings of impairments, as well as some common conditions within each category. Each individual condition has specific criteria of severity you must meet in order to qualify for SSD benefits under that listing:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (amputations, fractures, burns, joint damage, etc.)
  • Sensory and speech disorders (blindness, deafness, loss of speech, etc.)
  • Respiratory disorders (asthma, cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular disorders (chronic heart failure, aortic aneurysm, arrhythmia, etc.)
  • Digestive disorders (liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.)
  • Urinary and reproductive impairments (kidney disease, kidney failure, etc.)
  • Blood disorders (anemia, sickle cell disease, hemophilia, etc.)
  • Skin disorders (dermatitis, chronic skin infections, etc.)
  • Endocrine disorders (diabetes, thyroid disorders, Cushing's syndrome, etc.)
  • Multiple-body-system impairments (Down syndrome, etc.)
  • Neurological impairments (epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, etc.)
  • Mental disorders (schizophrenia, mental retardation, substance addiction, autism, etc.)
  • Cancers (breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, etc.)
  • Immune system disorders (HIV/AIDS, lupus, inflammatory arthritis, etc.)

You can also qualify for disability benefits on the basis of a condition that is not included in the listings or a combination of multiple conditions if you can demonstrate to the SSA that your overall impairment is at least as severely disabling as one of the listed conditions.

Everyone's medical condition is unique, and I am dedicated to taking the time necessary to carefully review your medical record and determine whether you qualify for disability benefits under the SSA listings of impairments. Contact me today to discuss how I can help you.
